Chart correction warnings
There are many reasons that chart corrections that were in Local Notice
to Mariners don't appear with the corresponding chart in these files.
Here are the reasons that this may happen:
- Some notices were only in Microsoft Word
(TM) format. I don't have a program that converts Microsoft Word to
text. Instead I just treat the Word file as though it were text.
Mostly this works, but sometimes it fails. More recent notices are in
PDF, which is more reliable.
- The Coast Guard maintains these files by hand, and so they contain
typographical errors. If the errors are severe enough, I can't parse
the corrections.
- In particular, sometimes the chart number or the edition number is
wrong in the file. Then the correction goes in the wrong place, where
you won't find it.
- The format of the files is not quite rigid enough to allow
complete confidence in separating out the corrections. It's possible
that some of them have been misclassified.
- Various tabulations, such as lists of drilling rigs, that appear at
the end of the chart corrections have not been included because they
are not associated with a specific chart.
- Some of the Local Notice to Mariners issues are just plain missing
from the Coast Guard web site or are in unreadable formats.
Here is a list of missing issues.
- If the first thing in the corrections file is not a "new edition"
entry, then there may have been corrections in earlier issues that
were not online.
