``Constraints on Acceleration Mechanisms in the High-Latitude 
Solar Wind: A Ulysses Perspective''

Abstract:
 
        Experiments aboard the Ulysses spacecraft conducted the first
survey of the solar wind over a heliographic-latitude range extending from
-80.2o to +80.2o during solar conditions approaching those associated with
a minimum of magnetic activity.   Images of the Sun in soft X-rays revealed
two large-area coronal holes covering both poles, separated by a relatively
thin and planar streamer belt that was closely aligned with the solar
equatorial plane.    The structure of the solar wind was correspondingly
very simple, characterized by a structure free, high-speed flow (~800 km/s)
at latitudes poleward of about 23o, and a highly structured, low-speed flow
(~400 km/s) neighboring the heliomagnetic equator.   Many of the features
of the high-latitude wind sampled by Ulysses closely resembled those
observed by other spacecraft in the ecliptic plane during times when they
were immersed in solar wind flows topologically connected to either of the
solar magnetic poles.   These features will be presented, and discussed in
the context of the conditions in the low solar corona inferred from the
many remote sensing experiments conducted from Earth to date.   Particular
attention will be given to interpretation of the relatively constant and
low helium abundance (4.5 %) of the solar wind at high latitudes.\par
