I found the answer to my own question on PDF page 14 of the I-5 service
manual (Figure 3-3). The red lead (8) is supposed to connect to the
motor terminal closest to the frame. I had mistakenly swapped the
armature connections at the motor. Now the tractor moves forward with
the red armature lead positive and the expected field polarity.
