Don't run without a front roller if you value your deck motors.  
When wood rollers break, I make new ones out of solid grey PVC on the
metal lathe.  After makin a couple and liking them, made a whole set up
for my deck and they will never wear or break.  McMaster-Carr has the PVC
stock.

As for use as a handle - perhaps 5 yrs ago coulda horsed her up by the
roller but now I value the ol sacroiliac more.   As I say there are easy
ways.
