I've been using a "portable" charger for a few years since the timers on
both my JD and electrac quit. Just have a pair of jumper cable clamps
on the charger leads and hook up to the plus and minus terminals for the
pack (36 volts - batts in series) Works OK, charger is automatic type
and drops from 25 amps at start to zilch when charged. Only problem is
that its cutoff is a bit low IMHO.

Incidentally, the JD uses 3 12 volt batts., design sounds like your rig.
